Cheers! The Journal of Labor Research has
concluded that social drinkers earn anywhere
between 10 to 14 percent more
than
non-social drinks. And men can bring home an
additional 7 percent in pay.
Edward Stringham, professor of economics at
San Jose State University and co-author of
the study says, “social drinking builds
social capital...[because] social drinkers
are out networking, building relationships,
and adding contacts [that result in bigger
paychecks].”
The study was funded by the Reason
Foundation which is a libertarian think
tank. This study, though, has contradicted
research that was released in 2000 by the
Harvard School of Public Health. The
researchers said they created their
hypothesis through observation and scholarly
examination.
The researchers stated that their survey
empirically supported their theory. Drinkers
are at an advantage because they have a
wider range of social contacts that can help
them provide better business opportunities.
Social drinkers are also able to build
important relationships.
The researchers would like to apply this
study to the college atmosphere. They are
claiming that not only does the limitation
on college campuses or public venues reduce
the amount of fun but it also decreases
earnings. Anti-alcohol policies eliminate
one of the most important aspects of
drinking which is an increase in social
capital.
